He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32)
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. (3 John 1:2)
✅ Don’t just endure—enjoy it (Impulse Control)
“Don’t play; study instead?”
Impulse control is not merely the ability to suppress impulses. Impulsivity generally refers to a tendency to act without planning or to behave based on one’s mood in the moment. Impulse control, however, relates to the ability to self-motivate and regulate one’s own actions. It differs from simple endurance or patience. Rooted in autonomy, it is the ability to actually enjoy hardship—or a mental habit of transforming the process of enduring pain into a source of pleasure. Such a habit is a crucial element of resilience.
According to Maslow, there are fundamentally two types of motivation that drive human behavior. One is “deficiency motivation,” which seeks to fill a lack or need, and the other is “growth motivation,” which strives for self-improvement. If you eat because you are hungry, that action stems from deficiency motivation—the desire to resolve the lack caused by hunger. Conversely, if you train hard to become a better athlete, that action is driven by growth motivation.
Impulse control is more closely linked to growth motivation than to deficiency motivation. The mere strength to endure pain is actually associated with the motivation to avoid deficiency. Enduring hunger, sleepiness, or distress simply for the sake of enduring is merely patience, not impulse control. In contrast, impulse control signifies a growth-oriented capacity for self-regulation—the ability to make a consistent, joyful effort toward becoming a better version of oneself. Impulse control is a concept closely linked to Emotional Intelligence (EQ), a term popularized by Daniel Goleman. Consider the scenario where a child is given a marshmallow and promised a second one if they can wait fifteen minutes without eating the first. The child is then left alone. Resisting the urge to eat the sweet marshmallow right in front of them requires a remarkable level of self-control. The core of Goleman’s theory on emotional intelligence is that children who demonstrate this kind of self-control go on to achieve greater success in their academic and professional lives.
